Choosing a North Idaho Location for Your Session

Where to Start

The most important thing to consider when choosing a location for your photo session is the overall look you are hoping to achieve. North Idaho has a wide variety of different landscapes and looks. We have massive lakes with rocky cliffs, beaches, mountains, wide open fields, dirt roads, urban scenes and everything in between. Many of these locations take on a brand new feel in each new season. Another important thing to consider is if there is a location that holds any sentimental value for your family. Many families choose to have their photos done on a piece of land that is special to them.

Lighting

Most often, I try to plan for sessions that take place as close to golden hour as possible. As opposed to mid day sun, Golden hour provides a soft and flattering light. Taking advantage of golden hour also frequently results in beautiful sunsets. If you have lived in North Idaho very long, you know they can be breathtaking! Sometimes, due to schedules or other factors, a mid-day session is scheduled. In these instances, I always recommend a location that provides plenty of open shade. This type of shade, provides a much softer light, avoiding harsh mid-day shadows.

Weather

One thing to keep in mind, is the variable weather conditions we often experience. When its overcast, areas with open skies provide more natural light. If its windy, exposed areas, particularly by the lake do not provide any protection from the wind. Some areas, like Corbin Park in Post Falls, Idaho, does not have a road that is maintained in the winter and is sometimes closed.
